Bush approves 700 miles of fence on south border - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush signed
election-year legislation on Thursday to build 700 miles of fencing
along the U.S.-Mexican border to combat illegal immigration, prompting
a strong protest from Mexico.
President Bush had signaled opposition to widespread fencing in
the past, but his support for the plan approved Wednesday by the Senate
showed how eager he is to win over Republican conservatives who want to
take a tougher approach toward keeping illegal immigrants out.
