Hillary Comes Out
Sen. Hillary Clinton, who plays coy regarding her
position on gay marriage finally came out and fully explained where she
stands on the issue to a group of homosexual-rights leaders.
“I believe in full equality of benefits, nothing left out,” she said.
“From my perspective there is a greater likelihood of us getting to
that point in civil unions or domestic partnerships and that is my very
considered assessment.”

covered the event and said that “Clinton indicated she would not oppose
efforts by Eliot Spitzer, the odds-on favorite to become the new
governor, to enact a same-sex marriage law in New York.”
As I explained in the “Families File” in my Dossier on Hillary, she has
dodged giving a clear position on gay marriage in the past. On June
2006 she voted for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, but
enacted a personal policy of “don’t tell” in talking about her vote.
She has been known to moderate her support for gay rights in front of
conservative audiences, where she will say she is “personally opposed”
to gay marriage, but supports the Defense of Marriage Act her husband
signed in 1996. In a December 2003 interview she said she opposed gay
marriage, supported some form of civil unions, but was against the
Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution
